Easter Monday was an exciting day for young netballers in the Aleipata District.

The day presented them the opportunity to showcase their netball skills.

The organiser of the trials, Nise Tui, said the event was a huge success.

“The turnout was great.  It was a nice cool day thankfully,” she said.

“In total 26 girls trialled ranging from 11 to 18 years of age.  Majority were from Aleipata College and we even had a few keen primary school girls trial too which was great to see.  I had a few teachers turn up too and helped out especially with the refereeing which was awesome.”

She added: “All the girls were given the opportunity to trial and the netball talent in this district is better than what I actually expected, they really surprised me.”

A squad of 11 girls were selected to participate in the Netball Samoa Development Academy starting on the 23rd April at Gym 3, Tuana’imato.

The NS Development Academy is an initiative for the TeensNET Program.

“The girls here are excited at the prospects of netball being reintroduced back into the schools and the district.  Thanks to my husband and some of the village men who worked hard to measure, mow and paint the court, the trials turned out really great which I’m happy about.”

C.E.O Netball Samoa Rosemarie Esera was over the moon when approached by Nise last year with the prospects of introducing Netball programs in the Aleipata District.

“This is a means to an end for sustainable development programmes,” she said.

“It’s all about people with the passion wanting to give back to the sport by sharing their skills and knowledge. Nise is working closely with the Netball Samoa office to establish netball programs for all ages in her district and possibly a satellite Association.”
