Samoa’s leaders came together last night for a thanksgiving service to mark the official opening of the 55th Independence Day celebration.

Held at the Mulivali Catholic Cathedral, the service was attended by government officials.

The Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi and the Masiofo, Her Highness Filifilia Tamasese and Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi were present.

The Chairman of the National Council of Churches, Kasiano Leaupepe, conducted the service.

The prayer was conducted by N.C.C Vice Chairman, Reverend Aisoli Iuli and reading of the Bible was led by Reverend Maauga Motu, N.C.C Secretary.

The hymns were sung by the different government Ministries.

During the sermon, Leaupepe spoke about the power of what you say.

He also took the audience back to Samoa’s history and how it was not an easy road.

“Your ancestors have fought the good fight, and for that we are thankful,” he said.

“We are thankful for your love amongst our people, amongst the leaders of the country, the leaders of the government, the leaders of the villages and families, associations and also church leaders.”

Unity was the core message from Reverend Leaupepe.

“When will we say to God, we are one, we are willing to do your will.”

The celebration of Samoa’s 55th Independence Day will be held in front of the government building. The official programme starts at 6.05am with the arrival of the official guests.

They include the Head of Tokelau, Siopili Perez, Governor of American Samoa, Lolo Matalasi Moliga and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Bill English.

The Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, will deliver the official independence address followed by the raising of the flag by Member of the Council of Deputies, Tuimaleali’ifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II.

Traditional entertainments are scheduled for the afternoon before the official programme ends.

The celebration will continue in the evening with the official Independence Ball hosted by the Samoa Hotels Association at Gym 3, Tuana’imato.

Tomorrow is a national holiday with the Blues and Reds Super rugby match at night.
