The Classmates of 1981 have joined forces with the Ministry of Health as a strong ally to battle the ill-effects of Prostate Cancer threatening men.

The 81ers campaign themed, “The Struggle is real-Healthy Self Heal Thy Self” is targeting to scale up cancer awareness through public health promotions and awareness.

Their community out-reach is targeting rural areas with mission to encourage men to seek medical check-ups as like any form of cancer early detections promises the best option for cure.

“The drive is to decentralize the awareness to our rural areas,” says spokesperson Lemalu Lina Slade-Palamo. 

“It’s a fact of life that most men will not voluntarily travel to Apia or a hospital for a medical check unless they are ill.  And the 81ers is reaching out.

“The spouses also play a leading role by convincing their husbands to seek medical check-ups.”

 “The reality is that men are at times shy to admit that they need medical attention.  But rest assured as mothers and wives, we can use our influence to push our husbands to seek medical checkups.”

To jump start their campaign, the 81ers will be hosting a fundraising drive tomorrow, Saturday June 2nd at the Faleata Golf Course.

 “The success of our mission and outreach is dependent entirely on financial support from our stakeholders, business community and friends,” Lemalu said.

“We believe that we can deliver the message through our campaign. And with the Ministry of Health as a leading advocate we are confident that we can deliver our mission.

“Saving lives is a universal responsibility and being part of this campaign is our way of giving back to the community.”

Free medical checks up will also be provided during the Golf Tournament on Saturday to jump start the drive.

CLASS OF 81.

The group represents a menu of diversified professions who are products of the government and mission school system from Apia Infant to Apia Primary and Leififi Intermediate before we went our separate ways but we all completed our studies in our respective colleges here and abroad in 1981.

It brings together alumni from Avele, Samoa College, St Mary’s, St Joseph’s, C.C.W.S. Pesega, Leulumoega Fou, Logoipulotu College in Savaii, and  overseas universities.

Since its establishment in 2016 with their initial reunion and a historical Teachers Banquet to honour of past teachers for their influence in education journeys, we have had two successful reunions.

The last reunion took place in Auckland New Zealand in 2017.
