Planter contented with his lot

The humble plantation is the best way to deal with the cost of living.

That’s the opinion of Ausage Lotou, 56, from Nuu-Fou.

A fulltime farmer, he said the hard work pays off.

Ausage provides for a family of eight with fruits from his hard work.

“The plantation is our only source of income,” he said.

“If we run out of money we get taro for our meal instead of buying anything from the shop.

“So we depend on my plantation. Without the plantation we won’t survive.

Ausage has established good connections for his produces.

Tanoa Tusitala Hotel for instance places orders for pineapple, taro and coconuts from the farmer.

“By tomorrow, they will be here to pick up their stuff.

“I sell them coconuts for $2 each and they take about a hundred coconuts and pineapples.”

The money is enough to take care of their basic needs and the village and church donations.

Some people keep complaining about the cost of living but not Ausage.

“As the saying goes, words are not important but work is. Don’t complain. We just need to continue to work hard.”

But Ausage has bigger plans.

“I’m aiming for a new car,” he said. “It will make my work easier and I know it will help me and my family.”
