The groundbreaking of the $10million prison at Tanugamalala is a milestone for Samoa.

So said Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi.

He was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday.

Located inland, on 30 acre land, Tuilaepa said the relocation is a must.

“Tafa’igata is close to the town and it’s a residential area. Also the old prison building is deteriorating and the land is limited,” he said.

“The 30 acres allocated for the prison, is not only for the prison buildings but also for their plantation and also pig and cattle farms.

“Also with the new prison there will be rehabilitation and training for the inmates.

“This way when the inmates are released out in the public, they have additional skills to help them when re-entering society and when seeking employment,” said the Prime Minister.

He said the prison is locally funded and this is to ensure the safety of the public.

The Prime Minister thanked the government of Japan through Japan’s Ambassador Shinya Aoki, for the funding to build a proper and secure fence.

Tuilaepa said the new prison indicates that Samoa is stepping forward as the leading country in the Pacific to offer rehabilitation to the inmates.

“Special thanks to the Minister of Prisons and Associate Minister for spearheading this relatively important project. The burden is on them and they have been tasked by the Cabinet given their abilities to see this project through.”
