Samoa is a place to relax … but that’s about it

When Dear Tourist met Sam of New Zealand, he seemed pretty unexcited.

After spending five days in Samoa with some of his friends, the Dear Tourist wanted to have a chat with him anyway for a refreshing change and find out what caused this air of indifference.

Sam runs his own electrical business back in New Zealand which he tells us is quite demanding so he was looking for a break.

This is his first time on our sunny shores but he was in two minds about the whole place.

He told us that he definitely feels relaxed here so that was a positive thing.

“I guess I came here more for just relaxing and to check the place out, I had a few days off work so that’s been cool,” he said.

“I’ve got my own electrical business so Samoa has definitely been good for having a relaxing time. There isn’t a heck of a lot to do here so you tend to just relax so I suppose that’s good. It makes you relaxed.”

I think we can all conclude that Sam is really relaxed.

We asked Sam if he managed to do a little research of things he could do and visit in Samoa prior to his flight.

“I did a little bit of research but not a lot,” he said. “I just had a look at the island and … but it’s been quite good going around with the scooters, it makes it handy to get around.

“I’ve been to Rarotonga  a few years ago. It’s similar but its smaller in Raro and also and I found that the beaches were more accessible there than here in Samoa.

I found that it’s quite hard to find a beach especially on this side of the island. We’ve checked out a bit but we haven’t gone far around the island.”

Sam admitted that they’ve only just realised that they are staying close to the commercial side of the island and that he hasn’t really tried any local foods but he would have like to if he knew where to look.

“We’ve mainly been eating at the hotel. We went to Paddles Restaurant and that was really good but I haven’t had much local food as such.”

With such a subdued look on Sam’s face, Dear Tourist asked Sam if he would ever return and if he had any suggestions for improvement.

“Ahhh probably not for a while. I mean I would come back if I needed to relax but yeah no I wouldn’t come back in a hurry.

“I’d tell people that this is a place more to come and relax, but you can’t come over with high hopes of doing heaps of stuff.

“I would like to see more things here like street food like maybe from the locals, you know what I mean and maybe some more nice seafood places. But yeah the locals are real friendly and nice which is good.”
