Raise your children right

Raise your children right and when they grow old they will not stray from what you taught them.

So says grandmother, Fa’alua Fata.

The 60-year-old believes it is critical for the people of Samoa today to raise their children by instilling life principles so they will know right from wrong.

“Children of today are the future,” she said.

“You know children are gifts from God. They are our blessings, they were given to us to raise with all we have. Unfortunately not all families can raise children the right way”

Fa’alua’s children have grown.

Today, she stays at Vailele and she is raising three grandchildren.

Like most families, she struggles with finances and resources.

But this is where parents need to instill proper values in children.

“Even if all we have is banana and taro, they have to learn to appreciate and value these things.”

For Faalua, there is an additional challenge.

Her daughter is no longer home, leaving her with multiple mouths to feed.

“She had done this several times now and this time she’s gone for good,” she said.

“How am I able to take care of these poor kids? This is why I had to ask Victim Support for help.

“I’ve decided to take them there for the meantime while I’m trying my best to get help.”

Fa’alua said paying electricity is a struggle as well as getting food.

“I can’t let them starve with me every single day. I know it’s hard to let them go but like I said I don’t know how to support my grandkids, because the cost of living is very expensive.

“Imagine when they reach the school age, that is even harder to think of.”
