In recognition of International Girls in I.C.T. Day, Digicel honoured its talented female employees across its operations, thanking them for their role in helping to make the company and by extension, the I.C.T sector, a success.

Led by the International Telecommunications Union, International Girls in I.C.T Day aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field.

In support of concerted global efforts to increase the number of women in technology and women in leadership, Digicel participated by highlighting key developments within the organization that reflects its commitment to the development of women in technology and leadership during the local celebration of Girls in I.C.T last week.

Digicel Samoa is proud to be at the forefront of this initiative in Samoa.

Rory Condon, C.E.O, said: “We have fantastic Samoan talent, right here in Digicel, and half of our management team are talented young women.”

Rosemary Thew, one of the youngest employees at Digicel is the epitome of girls forging ahead into the fields of technology as is evident in her growth within the organization.

Rosemary, is employed at Digicel as a Systems Technician. She has been heavily involved in Digicel’s community engagement and education programmes.  Rosemary leads Digicel’s Coder-Dojo community I.T skills programme; she is an advocate for Digicel Women in Leadership and is one of the mentors for the students on DigicelTechnology Scholarships Programme.

The Coder-Dojo programme that Rosemary coordinates is a global non-profit movement of volunteer-led, community based computer programming clubs for young people has been active for seven months now and it has attracted over 20 young students. One the young students include Wainalei Ieremia, a young female Samoa College student, who is now already gearing up for a career in I.C.T.

During her presentation, Rosemary encouraged young women to consider a career in I.C.T, challenging the notion that that I.C.T is a career-path for men only. She epitomizes the Girls in I.C.T slogan ‘expanding horizons and changing attitudes’.

Mr. Condon is fueling Digicel’s commitment to increase the number of women in technology within the company and across the country.

“Over the past year, Digicel has extended its overall investment in people to encompass these programmes. The future is bright for technology in Samoa, and girls are positioned very well to pursue a career in this field,” says Mr. Condon.

“I.C.T is an exciting and rapidly changing sector with technology increasingly being part of our day to day lives. Technology in education is no longer a luxury, but a necessity and we in Digicel want to create these opportunities for young women. “

To celebrate International Girls in I.C.T Day 2016, Digicel is embarking on several internal and external initiatives, includes providing scholarship and internship opportunities for females studying I.C.T. Digicel also recently launched a three-phase Women in Leadership Learning Power series that includes an intense four-day leadership development workshop, executive coaching and a strict mentoring/mentee programme to empower women in technology.
