A family home was burnt to the ground in Moata’a yesterday afternoon.

The residence was occupied by an elderly couple, their daughter and grandchildren who were evacuated to their neighbor’s house as firefighters battled to contain the fire.

None of the family members were at the scene when the Samoa Observer arrived. But an eye witness, who lives next door, said the fire started from the children’s room.

Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia told the Samoa Observer everyone was asleep while the children were playing in their room.

“The fire started from room the kids were playing in and luckily, the woman was able to remove her children and mother from the house before the fire spread.”

Autagavaia said he was asleep when he heard the old lady calling for help, prompting him to run out, only to see their house on fire.

“I immediately called 911 to be informed the fire truck was on its way, not long after the first fire truck arrived and it ran out of water yet the fire was still spreading inside the house.

“Eventually more fire trucks arrived but it was too late, the fire has already ripped through the house,” said Autagavaia.

An eye witness said neighbors ran to assist the family but there was nothing they could do as the fire had spread.
