Father sees the rain as blessings

The rain might come as an inconvenience to some of us but for Esau Junior of Tanumalala, it is a true blessing.

That’s because without a steady supply of running water, the 33 year old says they rely heavily on rainwater for survival.

“We live off the rain water,” he said.

“We haven’t had any water since we moved here because we were told the water pipes don’t reach our home. So we live depending on the rain for water.

“This has always been the problem and we have had enough of it.”

Esau is desperate for a water tank.

“As you can see, (pointing to barrels and bins) these are the only things we can use to store water. You can see that the water is not clean to drink.”

Last year, Esau said they thought they had a ray of hope.

“We had some business around the corner and they knew we struggled to get water so they offered us water but of course money is needed.

“They offered to refill a tank of water for $100 which is easier for us because not all the days are going to rain.

“But the problem is we don’t have any money.

“We need water and at the same time we need money to buy water.”

There are more than 10 people in Esau’s family.

“But none of us work. We depend on the sale of cabbages, cucumbers, cocoa, taro and banana for living.

“We usually make $140 a week, but we also have kids to take to school.
