Meet Finau Petelo of Lotofaga Safata.
Finau earns a living by fishing and he caught up with the Village Voice at Faleu Manono yesterday.
A father of four who is trying to make ends meet daily, he has an issue with the high cost of living in Samoa. Finau used to work for Yazaki.
However due to family obligations, he opted to quit his job to cater to the needs of his family and in-laws. The fisherman lives with his wife and children at his in-laws’ residence.
Despite struggling to make ends meet daily, Finau is enjoying life as a fisherman.
“The money I am earning is very good,” he said.
“But the only problem we suffer from is the high cost of living.
“Everything is expensive and we can’t afford daily necessities.”
Finau lives in Faleu Manono because that is where his wife is from.
“I’m originally from Lotofaga Safata.”
Finau is thankful to be married to his wife, whose brothers and father, are skillful fishermen.
“They have been doing it for so many years and it has become a family tradition that every man is a fisherman in this family.
“So as you can see, I am now a fisherman and this is where I developed my fishing skills from.”
The fisherman, who is 32 years old, admires how the Council Village of Faleu Manono manages the village affairs.
“Our village has been fortunate these days in terms of peace and harmony. Our village is peaceful and we don’t encounter any problems.
“There is no violence whatsoever and that is because our Village Council is good at keeping the peace and keeping everyone in check with village policies and curfews.”
