Students at Vaimea Primary School returned to a better learning facility yesterday morning, thanks to Japan.

School Principal, Tonu’u Fuamoli Misi, told the Samoa Observer the project is a dream come true.

The project was officially opened on Wednesday by the Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Papali’i Niko Lee Hang.

“The cost of the whole project when we add the funding from Japan is $661,000,” she said.

“The other part of the money was the funding from the school with the parents as well as its partners who helped with the building of the project.

Tavita Construction carried out the work.

“We used to have a hall but it was unsafe for the students, so for some time when we had our school functions we would do it outside,” she said.

“But we saw that the school was growing and that it was not safe for the children to be out in the sun hence why we requested the Embassy of Japan to fund our school hall.

“Today we are very happy that the children will no longer be sitting outside when we have school events.”

And with the facilities in top shape, the Principal said the challenge is to have more teachers.

“The number of students attending Vaimea Primary school is 750 students and 19 teachers,” she said.

“We have already sent requests to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture for more teachers and at the moment we are on the waiting list.

“At the moment we are coping and with the help from the parents as well.”

She acknowledges the support of the parents, teachers, students and most especially the Japanese Embassy.
