American Samoa supports U.S. Climate Alliance

American Samoa has thrown its full support behind the United States Climate Alliance. 

The strong support is shown by American Samoa’s Governor, Lolo Matalasi Moliga, in an Executive Order dated 20 September 2017.

 “The Executive Order has two purposes,” it reads. 

“To memorialize American Samoa's support of the Paris Agreement and the American Samoa Government's (A.S.G.) intention to honor the goals of the agreement, and to confirm American Samoa is joining the United States Climate Alliance, as the first Pacific Territory to do so. 

“The existing American Samoa Climate Change Executive Order, evidencing A.S.G. commitment to ameliorate climate change as promulgated in Executive Order No. 10A-2007, is ten years old and needs to be updated to account for new research and new goals in becoming self-sufficient by using renewable energy to meet American Samoa energy needs.” 

The Alliance was created in response to the announcement by the U.S. President, Donald Trump, that America would withdraw from the Paris Agreement.

Governors Andrew Cuomo, Jay Inslee and Jerry Brown then moved to create The United States Climate Alliance. 

According to the United States Climate Alliance website, this bi-partisan coalition of states is committed to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement. 

“Smart, coordinated state action can ensure that the United States continues to contribute to the global effort to address climate change.”

The U.S. Climate Alliance members are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington,” says the press statement.
