Education is the key to success.

And for Toma Usoali’i, 21, education is also the key to unlocking doors of opportunities in one’s life.

Mr. Usoali’i from the village of Satui works at one of the families around the Si’usega area and he enjoys his work.

Speaking with the Village Voice team yesterday, Mr. Usoali’i said he quit school when he finished Year 11 at Aana College.

“I dropped out of school after my Year 11 at Aana College three years ago because I couldn’t handle it anymore,” he said.

“I thought I would be wasting my parent’s money by going to school because I have no interest in it anymore, so I quit and started working.”

Mr. Usoali’i said when he was studying; his father was the only one working to support his younger sister and mother.

“When I stopped going school, my father was telling me to look for a job immediately so I can assist him with supporting our family,” he said.

“Before I got a job, I was sent to the plantation almost every day to supply crops for our family and that’s when I knew quitting school early was a bad idea because there was so much work to be done at home.

“So then I got a job and things went well because I was able to support my family every week with $150 I make from my job.”

Mr. Usoali’i admits that his decision to quit school was not a good idea and he encourages students not to do the same.

“I understand now it was not the best idea ever, but I am happy that God guided me to this stage where I could earn money to support my family.

“I am excited that I can support my family and I encourage the students who are in school at the moment not to give up because education is the key to everything in this life.”
