Samoa-China Friendship Park in pipeline

04 November 2017, 12:00AM

Design plans for the Samoa-China Friendship Park at the Apia Waterfront are currently being finalised and will soon be implemented.

The Friendship Park is part of the Apia Waterfront Development Project, which covers the area behind the FMFMII Government Building at Eleele Fou, and designed for cultural communication, entertainments, sports and recreational activities, performance and gathering.

Undertaking the design work is a team from China who are currently in the country.

They are from the Bureau of Housing, Urban and Rural Planning and Construction of Huizhou Municipality.

In Samoa, they have been holding joint discussions with key officials and stakeholders on the specific procedures and draft design plans for this Chinese funded project, as well as for another Chinese funded project, the Arts and Culture Center to be built on the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture grounds in Malifa.

The intention for the visit is for the two governments to mutually agree on specific procedures and the final design plans for the two projects. The Huizhou working team will also work on preparatory arrangements for the construction of the projects which they hope to commence in as early as next year, 2018.

Details of the Draft Design for the Friendship Park will be revealed once finalised with any changes, following in-depth technical consultations and review with the respective local sectors. When the Draft Design plans are accepted, the two Governments will proceed with formalising the respective agreements before implementation of works begin.

The Apia Waterfront Plan was launched last year by the Prime Minister,Tuilaepa Dr. Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, and is a joint initiative by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment through the Planning and Urban Management Agency and the Samoa Tourism Authority on the development of the Apia waterfront area, and currently working together with various Government Ministries and Corporations.

The area covered by this project is from Mulinuu Penisula to the Apia town area, Vaiala and Taumeasina.

The Vision for the Plan is to create an inclusive, safe and clean waterfront that reflects a unique Samoan experience. It must also connect people to the sea, enhance the area for community use and support opportunities for local business initiatives.

There are four waterfront areas in the Plan: Mulinuu Waterfront - from Mulinuu to the Malaefatu Play Space at Sogi; Apia Waterfront Central - from the Savalalo market to the Mulivai bridge; Apia Waterfront Harbour - Beach Road towards the Matautu wharf; Vaiala Waterfront - from the Palolo Deep Reserve to Taumeasina.
