What happens during the transition

Dear Editor,

Re: Thinking local for the tough times

Thanks Mata’afa for the editorial. Regarding the latter part of the editorial, here’s a rather reliable general observation of years past - and even today.

No member of the ‘aumaga (untitled men), hence a taule’ale’a, is overweight or obese - even despite their heavy carb diets.

That apparently is a result of their extremely active lifestyle from their roles and responsibilities in the villages.

Then notice the big difference when these same taulele’a become matais and transition into more inactive and sedentary (faamaepaepa ...lol!) lifestyles.

They start ballooning and become inflated (fefete) - in more ways than one. Sooner or later, diabetes, high blood pressure and other close friends start the “deflating” process. The rest is history.
