Met Office says ‘no tornado’

The Samoa Meteorology Office would not confirm reports about a tornado at Alafua yesterday.

Emau Toluono, a weather forecaster with the Meteorology Office, told the Samoa Observer there was no recorded tornado in Samoa at all.

The Met Office was contacted last night following a social media post where a family asked the Met Office if there had been a tornado.

According to the family, the incident “destroyed our house at Alafua” with “iron roofing flying all over the place.”

The family posted photos on Facebook of the house with iron roofing strewn across the lawn.

The family also asked for public assistance if anyone else was affected.

According to Mr. Toluono, the only weather pattern was strong winds.

“I think the only logical explanation is that at Alafua, the strong winds that blew went straight to the mountains and when they came back, it could have been in a circular move that was stronger than before,” he said.

“I am certain that there was no tornado recorded in any of our systems, it’s just strong winds.

“Also we did not get any official complaint directed to our office or any inquiry about a so-called tornado.”
