China has donated $200,000 to the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to fund climate change programmes.

China’s Ambassador to Samoa, Wang Xuefeng, said the funding is part of the support that the Chinese government announced last month through President Xi Jinping.

“During the group meeting, President Xi stressed that China understands the particular concern of Pacific Island countries over the issue of climate change, and will continue to support the countries in improving their capability to address climate change.”

“China will work with Pacific Island countries to jointly advance the efficient implementation of the Paris Agreement and promote green, low-carbon and suitable global development,” he said.

SPREP director general, Kosi Latu, thanked the government of China for its continuous support since 1998.

The financial assistance to the organisation is an important part of China’s efforts to assist Pacific Island nations such as Samoa address climate change, added Mr. Xuefeng.

He said the funding support elevates the relationship between Samoa and China to one of a comprehensive strategic partnership, featuring mutual respect and common development.

“This announcement by President Xi speaks volume for China’s commitment to helping Pacific Island counties to address climate change and achieve suitable development.”

President Xi gave the undertaking on the sidelines of last month’s APEC Leaders Summit in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, when he met with the leaders of the eight Pacific Island nations that recognise Beijing including Samoa.
