The Parliament of Samoa has the final say as to the next step on the findings of audit reports produced by the Office of the Auditor General.

This was the response from the Auditor General Fuimaono Afele Taimalelagi – when responding to questions from the Samoa Observer – on whether the Audit Office can make recommendations to the relevant agencies to act on the findings of the Auditor General’s reports.

He said Parliament is the end of the national governance, reporting and accountability process. He said the question, in his view, should be posed to Parliament which leads the democratic governance and to which completes the pillars of the Government where all the reports and information are reviewed.

Fuimaono said good and ethical national governance have a role to play – whether it be the Parliament, Government Executive and the judiciary and public servants as well as the private sector, civil society including the church, media and the citizens.

“Good and ethical national governance is a cooperation of these vital entities of the country,” he added.

The Samoa Observer visited the Office of the Speaker two days in a row, seeking comments from Speaker Leaupepe Toleafoa Faafisi and was told to “return the next day”.

Last year the Audit Office has submitted the Irregularity and the Audit Report for the Government for the financial year ending June, 2017, on October 3, 2018.

This means that the Audit Office is now up to date (at the time) in all its reports on the Government’s use of public funding up to the last financial year.

The Samoa Observer has been publishing the findings of the audit and irregularity reports since June 2018.
