Mothers celebrate on rugby field

The Samoa Rugby Union (S.R.U.) decided to celebrate mother day this year by doing what they do best, and that is through a display of rugby talent.

The Mothers and Daughters Fun-day which took place yesterday morning not only brought faith in developing the girl’s rugby squad but it was an opportunity for the girls to show their parents what they are made of.

The parents who came down to the event were first introduced to the ‘Get into rugby’ programme under S.R.U. followed by the girl’s rugby tournaments where all the girls were split into different teams.

“The programme today was set not only to further develop our rugby girls, but to also engage with the mothers of the players who have joined us,” event coordinator Toluiva Keneti Alapati said during an interview with Samoa Observer.

“We wanted to do this for the mothers not only for mother’s day but because they make most of the decisions for our rugby girls as well as most of the work around the household.

“So that’s why we want the mothers to come and watch their daughters on the field and to see their skills being displayed.

“Especially with the perfected basic skills these rugby girls have picked up from our programme.”

This was also S.R.U’s way of saying thank you to the supportive parents.

“This fun-day event is a small token of appreciation for all the hard work these mothers have done for their rugby daughters, as well as their work with the girl’s upbringing,” Toluiva said.

“I am pretty sure after the mothers see all the hard work these rugby girls have put into training, they will continue to pour out support for S.R.U. in regards to their daughter’s involvement with rugby.”

According to Toluiva, the involvement of the mothers in their girls programme is precious to the union.

“An example of how vital the roles of these mothers are to the girls programme, they hold much power in decision making, so they could easily disallow the girls to play rugby,” she said.

“But if the mothers see that these girls have come a long way in terms of their skills during this mother’s day celebration then they will definitely see that S.R.U. shows a lot of care for these girls.

“With the rugby girls programme developing more and more over time; it is good to have the mother’s on our side where they can see how great they are doing on the field.”

“I would like to thank the world rugby for helping us out with this programme; on behalf of the chairmen, chief executive and management team of S.R.U I would like to wish the mothers of Samoa a Happy Mother Day.”

After the display of skill, both the mothers and daughters came together for prize giving followed by refreshments and a mother’s day cake.
