Prince Tuiala makes family proud

Saturday was a day of celebration for students of the Manukau Institute of Technology.

It was their graduation ceremony held at the Vodafone Events Centre Auckland New Zealand.

Among the row of graduates was Prince-Auckland Tuiala, 24, who has completed a 3-year Degree in Information’s Communication Technology.

Prince has always had a fascination with technology and how rapidly it is growing in today’s world.

His main source of inspiration derived from a few aspects, which lead him to take on the challenge, from playing videos games and ‘talking shop’ with his older brother Joe, whom also graduated with a Degree in Information’s Communication Technology.

Most importantly it was a change of career path from what his Pacific Island peers were studying –

Sport & Recreation, Logistics, Customer Service, etc.

“I wanted to succeed in an industry where you don’t often see our people working in,” he said. “We have such a strong stigma attached to our people where we are known for hard and physical labour (which is not a bad thing) but we are capable of so much more.”

Prince, like every other student faced many obstacles in his journey, such as lack of the IT terminology, a certain level of understanding, whereupon he took it upon himself to go out of country to gain some international experience in Hawai’i where he is now incorporating that knowledge into his new career path today as an IT Solutions Specialist with Sharp NZ.

One piece of advice Prince hopes will be an inspiration to his Pacific Island peers that are currently studying – is to be persistent and to not be afraid to fail.

Embrace a vision/goal in your mind and strive towards it.  Prince believes wholeheartedly that ‘failure is the secret ingredient to success’.  Because this only motivates you want to try harder next time.

He goes on to say ‘anyone can graduate with hard work and determination where they will receive a piece of paper confirming this – it is how you use that piece of paper to open the doors of opportunity’.

Prince owes his achievement to his family for the support and encouragement throughout the years and looks forward to what the future holds for him.
