The highway in Vaimoso was temporarily closed on Saturday night as police tried to restore order following a clash on the main road between men from Vaimoso and Alamagoto.

Stones were thrown in the melee on the bridge in Vaimoso after 8.00 pm on Saturday night, compelling the police to divert the traffic as they attempted to quell the violence.

More than 20 police officers responded to the call. No official statement has been released by the police to indicate if any arrests have been made.

There were rocks in the middle of the road when Samoa Observer arrived at the scene. According to bystanders no motorists were hurt or vehicles damaged during the clash between the two sides.

Attempts to get comments from the Vaimoso village council was unsuccessful as of press time.
