Boxing teams from New Zealand and American Samoa have touched down on our shores for the Tri-Nation Amateur Boxing tournament this week.

The tournament, hosted by the Upolu and Savai’i Boxing Ring, aims to promote boxing and select a team to represent Samoa at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu.

An ava ceremony was hosted by the Samoa Amateur Boxing Association to welcome the guests.

“We are just grateful for the invitation from the Samoa Amateur Boxing for us to be part of this tournament,” New Zealand team Manager, Graig Mc Dougall said.

“We are looking forward to sharing this special moment with the local boxers here and from American Samoa.”

The Samoa Boxing team is looking to use this tournament as a test for their Pacific Mini Games representatives.

“The Samoa Boxing team will try out their second best team during the first night of the tournament, while Mini Games representatives will be out testing their preparations on the tournament’s second and final night.”

Representing American Samoa are four boxers with three officials and New Zealand eight boxers from various places in Aotearoa with three officials.

The New Zealand Boxing team presented boxing gears to the Samoa boxing team to show their appreciation and build strong bonds between the two boxing nations.

The two-night event is scheduled to kick off today.
