Island Rock brings Christmas smile

The challenges facing Toma Tuilata and his family remain, but a gesture by local company Island Rock has brought a smile to their faces.

Toma, 48, and his family was one of four families—who were selected to participate in Island Rock’s 25 Days of the Spirit of Christmas Campaign—and gifted Christmas hampers.

They were selected after their story on the difficulties they were facing at home, was published this year in the Village Voice column of the Samoa Observer.

“On behalf of my family, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude towards Island Rock and Samoa Observer, for without these two companies we would not have been blessed.

“We did not think that something like this could happen, because in all honesty, not many people would just give something in exchange for nothing.

“But I believe that the Lord will reward all your kindness and generosity, and I pray for nothing but his blessings upon each and every one of you,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the company’s owner, the management and staff, Island Rock representative Maiava Iosia soke said the aim of the campaign is to spread the Christmas spirit of giving and love to those who need it.

“It is part of way of giving back to the community especially to those that are not fortunate to celebrate Christmas. Our programme is ongoing for 25 days hence the name and it will feature a variety of activities,” he said.

The Christmas hampers comprise a box of chicken, tinned fish, noodles, box of crackers, sacks of rice along with toys for the children.

Toma said he wanted his story published in Village Voice because he wanted a job. But the gesture by Island Rock came at a critical time for his family, as it means they will now have food over the festive period.

“I was featured on Village Voice because I was in need of assistance looking for employment.

“And at this very moment, I am still searching for opportunities, but thanks to Island Rock that our family can have some food during the holidays.

“Thank you also for the gift of toys, which has made my children very happy—not every day you see the excitement and smiles of children’s faces when they get toys,” he said.

The campaign runs for 25 days and will also feature a variety of programs and activities.
