Man hits out at cost of living

The sky rocketing cost of living impacts the daily lives of Samoans in many ways.

And with daily obligations breadwinners of families need to meet everyday, life is not a walk in the park for many.

So says Ioane Isa’ako from the village of Fausaga Safata.

The 30-year-old said the cost of living is an issue that should be looked at.

“I think we should be helped on this matter,” he tells the Village Voice.

“Our voice should be heard because we are only human and we can’t afford to do everything on our own sometimes.”

“Our loads are heavier than it already is but having the expensive cost of living added on to that; it’s just too much and I’m disappointed because taking care of our families will always lead to this issue if we can’t provide our families financial support.”

Currently, Ioane works for a restaurant at the Faleolo Airport.

He said he relies on the money he earns for his survival and it was still not enough because of the responsibilities and the payments he has to make.

“For example, if I earn $200 and plan to use that for a week, that is not enough,” he said.

“Most of the time it is spent on so many things in only just a day. We have bills, food and obligations.”

“So how can someone with only a little amount of cash save for the future if this is how the cost of living is for us right now? It just keeps on taking more and more and yet we earn so little from our jobs.”

Ioane feels the cost of living is too much for the Samoan people and the issue needs to be addressed.

“Because if the cost of living keeps on rising, then our pay should be as well because we deserve to have enough to spend and save for our future use.”
