The Just Play Programme celebrated the 70th Birthday of UNICEF in Samoa this week.

The Birthday celebration ceremony was held at Lona Fagaloa.

UNICEF is one of the Just Play Programme donors.

To commemorate the hard work of UNICEF through Just Play Programme, the celebration was made specifically for schools in the Fagaloa Districts who are in the Just Play programme.

The Just Play Programme promotes physical activity for children aged 6-12 years old through football-related activities, while also addressing endemic issues such as non-communicable diseases, poor nutrition, gender equality, stigma and discrimination towards children with disabilities.

The event also marked the 8th week since Just Play reached schools in the District.

The keynote address was delivered by the UNICEF Representative in Samoa Tupepepa Aumua-Esera stressing the importance of giving equal opportunity for children. The Just Play Programme is a perfect fit with UNICEF’s Sports for Development Programme which uses sports, recreation and play to fulfil the right to play and as an avenue for participation, learning, health and protection. UNICEF is pleased to bring such a programme in rural a area like Fagaloa.

Special guests for the day included Japan’s Ambassador, Tuimaugaoali’i Shibuta Kazumasa, Chinese Ambassador, Wang Xuefeng and his good lady, representatives from the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development.

UNICEF Pacific and OFC have joined forces in July 2013, collaborating on the Just Play programme implemented in 11-Pacific Island countries.  The festival content includes Fun games and clinics provided by the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development.
