The three-year on-farm research effort by the Crops Division of M.A.F sponsored by S.A.C.E.P has ended. 

The research programme emphasized the introduction of new varieties for crops targeted for import substitution namely tomatoes, sweet peppers, onions, carrots and potatoes.

The programme also prioritised the improvement of the production systems for important local crops like lettuce, head cabbage, Chinese cabbage, bananas and papaya and the introduction of new crops to improve the Samoan diet such as Kang Kong.

In addition, the programme addressed important farmers’ issues including improved open field nurseries using rocks readily abundant within the farm, the enhancement of seed germination through different techniques and the management of pesticides. 

A series of new technologies were also introduced in the field trials including the use of planting templates, high population densities, different planting patterns, foliar fertilization, formulation and proper quantification of fertilizer materials and the design of small drainage ditches.

Technologies were also introduced at the nursery for the production of healthy and vigorous transplant seedlings including the use of pellets, foliar fertilization and the use of improved potting mixes.

In August 2015, the Crops Division launched a first batch of technologies tested under S.A.C.E.P. 

A second batch of technologies needs to be launched, including the results of onion, carrots and head cabbage trials, as well as other technologies developed by the Crops Division of MAF under S.A.C.E.P and other Projects. 

The launching will provide an opportunity to share the results of the tests with the scientific community, farmers, buyers of produce and other concerned participants in the supply chain for fruits and vegetables, as well as the general public. It means the developed technologies are cleared by the Crops Division and M.A.F to be used by farmers in their fields.

For this purpose, a formal launching of the developed technologies will take place on Wednesday April 13 2016 at Tanoa Tusitala Hotel, through a Crops Division Agricultural Day consisting of exhibits, demonstrations and seminar/workshops aimed at the scientific community, farmers, buyers and other supply chain participants. 

The general public will also be welcomed to the events.
