For Pepe Taai, 50-years old from Eva, his need to seek a job is because of his 90-year old mother.

“At first I did have a job in engineering but I had a reason why I quit,” he told Village Voice.

“I’d hardly see my family because we went to far distant villages in Savaii and so there was not enough time for me to spend with my family and my kids, especially my mother.”

“In my family there’s only six of us including my mother, my wife and my three kids.”

“I quit working because I have to stay home and help my wife out in providing for my elderly mother.

“We are responsible for preparing food for her and everything, because my kids are too young.”

“I have decided to look for a job to earn money, so I can afford take good care of my mother. I have my other siblings, who often help for her care.”

“Although there is help, that doesn’t mean I have to sit around and do nothing, I must be strong to look for work to take care of my family, especially my mother as she is old.”

“Sometimes, everything happens at the same time when it comes to family obligations, - school fees, water and electricity bills it costs us lots of money.”

“Because of that I was thinking of getting a job. We have a plantation but it’s for food, we don’t sell it.”

Mr Ta’ai understands that life nowadays is not easy anymore if you don’t have work.

“Everything in life we do is for our family” he said.

“The future of our children and our parents as well, caring for these two is not easy because we know life today is all about money.”

“To me personally, we don’t earn enough money but I have lived long enough to know how to help my family.”

“We have a plantation so we survive compared to other families who do not have plantations and they struggle much more.”

Pepe’s mother is the motivation for him to look for a job. 

“Whatever job I get that is more than enough.  I want to be strong for my family especially my mother.”

“If I get one that is more than enough for my mom celebrating Mothers’ Day.”

“Even though the cost of living is very expensive but providing for parents and children must be everyone’s priority.”
