Prime Minister

Message for National Youth

Week and Father’s Day

It give me great pleasure to address you all this morning, on the joint celebration and commemoration of not only the Father’s Day of Samoa, but also the National Youth Week and International Youth Day, which is commemorated on August 12th every year.

The Theme for these next few days is Safe Space for All - which is adopted the International Youth Day’s theme of “Safe Space for Youth.”

We have noticed that in the context of the faasamoa, safe and security in anything and everything must involve the totality of the aiga – family.

It is this whole family approach that we can gladly celebrate Father’s Day this year, acknowledging their huge contributions to the development o families, churches, villages and the country.

A symposium is organized for fathers to share on this same theme and discuss how it links to Government’s District Development Planning program – which 18 districts have already completed.

This program will continue to engage the remaining districts.

This holistic program focusing on leading to change, will determine and inform developments for these districts in the coming years and I urge you therefore to support this initiative and see how you can address developments from a district – owned and driven plan. I urge Members of Parliament also to support and lead the development of these Plans.

For National Youth Week, we have committed more than just a day to celebrate the contribution of young people – whether they are women, men or people with disabilities – to the achieving of the Sustainable Development Goals.

With the support of our development partners, local and international organizations, we are able to deliver through the “safe space” before us this morning, to bring together all services providers, their information and support so you the young people of Samoa will not miss out on all these opportunities.

This shows also how much we value your development and how much you meant as the future of this nation.

I call on all UNDP, UNFPA, ILO, DFAT Australia, SBEC, Bluesky Samoa, YCAN, and all Ministries, Corporations and the Private Sector. Faafetai also to our students travelling from Savaii as well as all schools that will be part of these three day’s program. Faafetai also to our entertainers as well for your assistance and support.

Without further ado, I wish all the father’s of Samoa an enjoyable and safe Fathers’ Day and officially open the celebration of the National Week 2018 on the theme, “Safe Space for All”
