Government ministries had their half day sports event focusing on keeping fit at Marist Primary School field yesterday.

Associate Minister of Health, Salausa Dr. John Ah Ching, said this is one of the best ways to improve performance in the public service.

“The farmers get to have healthier bodies than those working inside offices, and that’s why we have conducted this programme to ease diabetes,” Salausa said.

“If your body and mind is healthy, then there will be no need for you to be excused from work because of sudden illness and laziness.”

The annual programme is conducted by the Ministry of Health for every ministry with the goal of reducing the absence of colleagues from work and to ensure a healthy being.

Salausa told the Samoa Observer of the ways to safeguard a healthy body and mind and to ignore undergoing dialysis treatment.

In the 2018 Ministry of Health survey and research, they found that diabetes was one of the major causes of death in Samoa.

In terms of funding, each government ministry will donate to help in the coordination of the programme.

Samoa Qualifications Authority employee, Bara Sooalo said this has been a new fun routine for her to lower the sugar content she can feel in her body.

“I am the laziest person in my family and I started learning about this special day last year and I have to say I enjoy the exercises a lot and I can feel my fats crawling slowly away,” Ms. Sooalo said.

Salausa wishes to improve this sports day next year and the coming years for a safer and healthier Samoa.
