Two deaths were reported to the police last week.

The first death was a 20 year old male from the one of the villages in the Faleata District who was hit by a vehicle driven by a friend. This was confirmed by the Media Spokesperson of the Ministry of Police, Maotaoalii Kaioneta Kitiona.

“The matter was reported to the police at 10.35pm in the 1st of July. “The accused is 42 years old and has been charged with murder, while the deceased is a 20 year old male,” he said.

The villages of both the deceased and the accused are unknown, however they were friends.

“The two were having a drink at night and then ended up in a dispute. It is believed that the accused used his vehicle to run over his friend.

“He is scheduled to appear in court on 18th of July. Maotaoalii urged the public to not make a habit of drinking in public or near the roads.

“This is a timely reminder about the dangers of alcohol,” he said. “Sometimes people get really drunk and then they exchange words and it ends up in a dispute.

“We want to encourage people to stay home and drink moderately if they do want to drink,“

The second death occurred on the 2nd of July around 7a.m. when a 19 year old male was found dead outside of his home.

However, Maotaoalii said it is believed that this may be a suicide case.

Investigations are ongoing.

“This matter will be called in court on the 17th of July,” he said.

“At the moment we don’t know why the deceased has taken his life the only thing we know is that the family woke up in the morning and found him.
