Sports unite youth members

Using sport as a vehicle to teach life lessons is not a new concept.

A Touch Rugby tournament held at Nu’u’ausala College over the weekend did just that as it brought together many youth members.

As well as a fun way to exercise and develop ball skills and teamwork, the young people also had the chance to meet others from nearby villages.

The tournament was organised by the Congregational Christian Church at Nofoali’i.

Various teams were invited to participate and entries were received from Fasito’o-tai, Toāmua, Fasito’o-Uta, Nofoali’i and other villages in the district of A’ana.

“It’s one of our strategies to develop touch rugby for youth members, both men and women,” said president Ailolo Simi.

“This tournament also provides a great way for young people together to learn not only the value of knowing each other but also the importance of being part of a team.

“Youth members should know others outside of their own groups and be more comfortable participating in other sports that might be outside of their comfort zones.

“There may even be opportunities for them to represent Samoa.”

Also through participating in sports, Ailolo said youths also learn such values as self discipline, patience, respect, teamwork and how to deal with failure.

“Sports offer a convenient method for learning how to develop these characteristics in their lives.

“We were able to organize this tournament because of the cooperation of our sponsors, the community and all the teams.

“I thank the Touch Rugby Association and chiefs of our village for the good work they are doing in assisting us today.

“Thanks to Eveni Sports, the Central Bank, Ah Liki, H.J. Keil, Samoa Commercial Bank, Partsright, Polynesian Travel and Tours, the Ministry of Natural Resources (Renewable Energy), Federal Pacific, Ford Samoa, Masalosalo Levale, Vou Pupi, Tomasi Ili Peni, Paradise Finance, Ma’ali Company, the Legislative Assembly, Paradise Finance, Liquor Planet, Bluesky and many others who helped out.

“Fa’afetai tele lava!
