The students at the National University of Samoa’s Media and Journalism School welcomed a very special visitor yesterday.

She was Timuiaipaepaetele Vaimoana Tapaleao, New Zealand Herald’s Pacific Affairs and People reporter, who spoke to the students about her work and experience as a Journalist.

She shared her story about how she became interested in the media and how her passion for reading made it her dream to become a journalist.

Timu has been with the New Zealand Herald since 2008 and holds a Bachelor of Communication Studies, majoring in Journalism, from AUT.

In 2009, she was honoured by the Human Rights Commission for a four-page feature she wrote on the victims of the Princess Ashika Tongan ferry sinking that year.

In 2010 she was named Junior Reporter of the Year at the then Qantas Media Awards, for her coverage of the 2009 Samoan tsunami.

She is a former student of Massey High School, a proud Westie, but hails from the villages of Toamua and Lelepa, in Samoa

She was accompanied to N.U.S by her father and they are in Samoa for a family fa’alavelave.
