It’s seven days before Donald Trump is sworn in as the next president of the United States of America, and yet the man has been described by the New York Times as a contemptible liar, and a person “with the maturity and the schoolyard viciousness, of an 8-year old.”

Now that’s scary.

So that perhaps it’s time now for every country in the free world to get a firm grip on oneself, and watch closely as to which hole in the ground almighty Donald Trump is likely to drag each one of them into.

In an editorial dated 10 January 2017 and headlined: “Trump, Trapped in His Lies, Keeps lying. Sad!” Lawrence Downes wrote: “He hasn’t taken office yet, but Donald Trump is lost, wandering in a labyrinth of lies and trying to drag the country in with him.”

Downes was referring  to  a speech by Trump in South Carolina in 2015 where he targeted the Time’s reporter, Sege Kovaleski, who has “arthrogryposis, a condition that leaves his right arm and hand, bent and rigid.”

In his address, Trump mocked the reporter as he was telling his audience: “You ought to see this guy,” and now he was demonstrating the reporter’s disability by flailing his own right arm and hand in the air making spastic movements, and according to Downes, as Trump was demonstrating he was disgracing himself.

 “The act was contemptible,” Downes wrote, “and in a way unbelievable; a future president showing the maturity and the schoolyard viciousness of an 8-year old.”

It all began when the actress, Meryl Streep, speaking at the Golden Globes back in 2015, said she had been stunned and heartbroken seeing Donald Trump mock the reporter with that physical disability, and she was referring to Sege Kovaleski.

 “I still can’t get it out of my head,” she said. “Because it wasn’t in a movie. It was in real life. And this instinct to humiliate, when it is modelled by someone in the public forum, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life  because it kinda gives permission for other people to do the same thing.

“Disrespect invites disrespect, violence invites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

And then, just as Meryl Streep had feared, America’s President-elect, Donald Trump, attacked; this time he was swearing he was innocent, and he was saying:

“Hillary flunky who lost. For the 100th time, I never &quote; mocked&quote: a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him ….

    In response, Lawrence Downes wrote: “Just more lies upon lies. It all goes back to Mr Trump’s baseless claim that he saw Muslims dancing in the streets by the thousands after the towers fell on 9/11.”

It gets more interesting though. Now in defence of her boss Donald Trump, Kellyanne Conway, went on TV where she told the American public: “He has debunked this so many times.

“Why is everything taken at face value?” she said. “You can’t give him the benefit of the doubt on this and he’s telling you what was in his heart? 

“You always go by what’s come out of his mouth rather than look as what’s in his heart?”

Now that’s fresh! Since when has the human heart become adept at articulating words the way the mouth does so that they are perfectly understood to the brain?

Would Kellyanne Conway be kind enough to reciprocate?

 Let’s face it. Politicians are by disposition skilful liars. It comes with the job. Indeed, there is a lot of manipulation involved; this is to say the more gifted the manipulator, the longer one remains in the job.  

Back in 1973, when it was proven that President Richard Nixon had lied to America he had played no role in the Watergate Break-in, Nixon was forced to resign.  

Later when Vice President Gerald Ford took over as President, Congress dropped impeachment proceedings against Nixon, but not the criminal ones.

Congress announced then there was still “a possibility” that Nixon could be prosecuted.

Which was when President Ford stepped in and issued “a full and unconditional pardon of President Nixon.”

He said: “The pardon immunizes Nixon from prosecution for any crimes he had committed or may have committed or taken part in as President.”

And then in a television address on 8 September 1974, President Ford gave America his reasons for his pardon proclamation, saying: “I feel the pardon is in the best interest of the country in that the Nixon family’s situation is an American tragedy, in which we all have played a part.

“It could go on and on and on, or someone must write the end to it. I have concluded that only I can do that, and if I can, I must.”

Now the question is: Is this why “Trump, Trapped in His Lies, will just Keep on Lying” and lying no matter what, as Lawrence Downes has pointed out?

What about us here in blissful paradise?

Are our politicians “wandering in a labyrinth of their lies” and as they’re doing so, they’re trying to drag our small country down in the dregs with them?
