“A healthy community is a happy community.”

With that in mind, the village of Leulumoega has embarked on a journey to promote healthy living within their communities.

It happened when they set up a camp which started four weeks ago and ended yesterday.

Sefulu Patu, Leulumoega’s E.F.K.S pastor’s wife was behind the initiative with the help from Peace Corps and volunteers from Projects Abroad.

Mrs. Patu believed it has been all fun and games, not only for the children, but for everyone who were involved.

“This activity includes people of all ages from the young and the old. We want to promote healthy eating and healthy living in our country.

This the second time they have done such energetic activities and a lot of overseas people from different communities and projects abroad have joined in this programme.

Some have donated things that are useful for the children such as bottles to store water, reading books, toothpaste and so much more.

“We are happy to be doing this for our community. We believe that a healthy community leads to a happy community,” Mrs. Patu says.

“This is a whole community work and we are happy to have the support of our village with this programme.

“It’s not just the Ministry of Health’s job to go around and tell us to have a healthy lifestyle. We have to start with our children and our communities.”

“This is what we want to implant into our children.

“We want them to know that it’s better to stay healthy to prevent themselves from being infected with all the Non communicable diseases.”

“The Peace corps who has been helping us with the camp has told us that what we are doing is a real success and the kids are enjoying it.

Mrs. Patu also said that she’s using opportunities like these to challenge other villages to follow such initiatives to stay healthy and live a healthy lifestyle.

Last but not least, Mrs.Patu said the 16 volunteers who helped them had vowed to continue supporting them with this initiative even when they return back to their countries.

“I really believe that if we all work together and if we have grassroots programmes such as this, this can really help achieve our goal of having a healthy nation.”
