Coming to Samoa brought back romantic memories for Terri Hudson from New Zealand.

Twenty-three years ago she was in Samoa to spend her honeymoon in Apia. This time, she is here with her mother, Shannon Poole to attend her niece’s wedding.

Her niece is marrying a Samoan and the celebration is to acknowledge the value and importance of family in the Samoan culture by bringing their relatives together.

Terri and Shannon arrived on Monday.

“I was surprised I recognised the harbour, markets and even the seawall where we (with husband) sat. It looked pretty much the same from what I remember,” Terri said.

For Shannon, it is her first time in Samoa and her first impression was the friendliness of the locals.

“She knows all the staff. The roads in Apia aren’t really wheelchair friendly, but we came around. The people are lovely and they came to help,” Shannon said.

Shannon said Samoa exceeded her expectations, especially the people pleased her.

“The people here are so relaxed, we are always so busy and stressed and they cause you to slow down, you can’t help it. It is island time,” Terri said.

“The restaurants are amazing to get local food. We love the palusami, to eat it at least once a day and we found really nice restaurants to get it. I love the food.”

They intend to return to and will recommend Samoa as a destination so people can experience the people, culture and food.
