Sydney mother’s time out in Samoa

Sara Anshau was enjoying some me time in the mid-morning by the pool at the Taumeasina Island Resort.

The young mother from Sydney, Australia, had decided to enjoy some time out for herself before her and her family leave Samoa.

“My 13-month-old baby is asleep with my husband right now back in the room,” said Sara. “I said to my husband ‘I need a break’,” she laughs.

Sara tells Dear Tourist that her husband had come over to Samoa for work and then they decided to spend a few days more for relaxation before it was back to reality in Australia.

“My husband had work in Apia so we decided to extend it a bit longer and have a few more days to tag along. This is a first time for all of us. It’s my daughter’s first visit to a different country ever, so it’s always going to be Samoa.”

Finding Samoa to be very hospitable and friendly, the Anshau family has discovered that travelling with a 13-month-old has not been difficult.

“It’s been really good here, travelling with my daughter and she has been really good. I found that it’s been pretty easy because everyone is really accommodating and the flight was really good when we flew with Fiji Airways. Everyone has been great here at the Taumeasina, it’s just amazing and the location is beautiful – we are right on the ocean.”

Even at To Sua Ocean Trench, with their almost-toddler in tow, the couple took turns climbing down into the trench saying that it was a once in a life time opportunity. And while the climb down was a bit daunting, it was worth it.

“So my husband and I took turns and went down there (To Sua), it is just so amazing and beautiful down there. I had only seen it in pictures. To actually be there was really lovely. I just think it’s amazing, just amazing.”

“The hospitality has been fabulous and the place is stunning. We’ve really enjoyed it.”

While the lush landscapes and friendly locals have impressed the Australian couple, Sara admits that they felt a bit let down by the food, having expected a more local theme in Samoa’s food selections.

“We went to Paddles, which was lovely, but we haven’t really ventured out. It was a Saturday and everything closed early and then Sunday came a long and of course everything is closed. The food has been okay; unfortunately for us, it wasn’t that great.

“Being from Sydney, we are used to so many international foods which is top notch. My husband and I have travelled extensively. We’ve been to Italy and we don’t need to taste Italy in Samoa.”

“We were kind of expecting and wanting to have more of the traditional Samoan food, even if it’s a fusion of it, but haven’t really seen anything yet.”

The family left the islands yesterday. But Sara hopes that they will make the trip again in the future so that their family could explore Savaii and take advantage of the snorkeling facilities.
