B.B.E. Ulalei Vaiala Rugby Club stopped a famous challenge from Marist yesterday in a match that could have seen the 2018 Taula Apia Rugby Union Club shield travel to the west of Upolu.

The final week of the Taula Apia Rugby Union Club competition saw Marist St Joseph’s Rugby Club taking on the mighty B.B.E. Ulalei Vaiala Blackie team in front of more than 500 spectators at Apia Park Stadium.

B.B.E. Ulalei Vaiala team dominated the first 30 minutes of the game scoring three unanswered tries, to lead by 19-0.

Uili Leavasa, right wing for B.B.E Ulalei Vaiala, crosses over for another five-pointer for his team just minutes to go before halftime, and converted successfully by Patrick Fa’apale.

Marist St Joseph’s was looking to put some points on the board coming in to the second spell of the game, after trailing 26-0 going to the break.

B.B.E. Ulalei Vaiala continued their momentum from their first half performance, which resulted in another try from their left wing, Hugo Fata, from a set piece move from their backline.

Marist St Joseph’s finally answered back to B.B.E. Vaiala when prop, Tiamu Viliamu, crosses over to open their account of the day.

B.B.E. Ulalei Vaiala immediate replied to another five-pointer try from skipper, Siliva Tapu, in an unforced error from Marist St Joseph’s from a restart kick-off.

Marist St Joseph’s fought back and scored two tries from prop Viliamu to his double, and hooker Sataua Kelekolio, but was little too late.

At the end, B.B.E. Ulalei Vaiala prevailed 40-19 to claim the Shield.

While this year’s club competition is coming to an end, Super Nine Rugby Championships is set to kick-off next week.
