Ten people from the village of Luatuanu’u, who are accused of being involved in a rugby fight that broke out in March this year, appeared in the District Court this week.

The accused appeared before District Court Judge Fepuleai Ameperosa Roma.

They are facing three charges, interfering with Police work, armed with dangerous weapons and throwing stones.

They pleaded guilty to all the charges against them and they are scheduled to be sentenced on the 31st of this month.

During the incident in April, Police Media Spokesperson, Auapa’au Logoitino said that at the time, 12 had been charged including a matai of the village.

The fight erupted during a rugby match at Saoluafata between Luatuanu’u and Falefa.

It resulted in seven people and eight Police officers being hospitalised at the time.

“All of them have now been charged with disorderly conduct and throwing stones,” Auapa’au said at the time.

He said there are more people to be charged from the incident.

“For now, some of our Police officers are in the villages involved and they’re still investigating the incident.

“The chiefs of Luatuanu’u brought 18 suspects and 12 were charged after the investigation.

“The Ministry is working side by side with the villages in this matter and we thank them for their support.”
