A positive attitude and an open mind are characteristics of all good fishermen.

This is the belief of dedicated fisherman, Seupule Selesele, 50, of Lalovi Mulifanua.

Mr. Selesele met the Village Voice team yesterday afternoon while gearing up to go fishing because this was his usual Tuesday routine.

Fishing has always been part of his life.

“I have enjoyed the work especially the money I get from selling fish and I mainly get $160 a day,” he said.

“I have been doing this for so long and this is the only way that I can support my family with food and with cash as well.”

Mr. Selesele also shared his experience of being a fisherman.

“It is hard work for beginners but if you have a positive mindset then you will know that it is a fun thing to do as a leisure activity as well.”

“Fishing around the lagoon area is what I do and I only go fishing three times a week.”

Mr. Selesele said fishing also had its challenges.

“The catch is not the same anymore because I think most of the fish are caught by those big fishing boats around the area.”

“Another issue is the sea level rise and lately sharks have been swimming in the lagoon area it gets deeper when it is high tide.”

“Storm surges when it is high tide or when the wind gets stronger is another issue.”

Mr. Selesele said having a positive attitude is essential in becoming a good fisherman.

“An open mind is also needed in controlling the way you think as well as patience; those are the few good tips for a good fisherman.”
