The Primary Mathematics Science Project (P.M.S.P.), which was funded by the government of Japan, will be handed over to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture (M.E.S.C.) today at the Aute Conference Room.

The hand over follows three years of implementation in 72 primary schools.

The Hokkaido University of Education (H.U.E.) in Japan has been implementing the project with M.E.S.C. under the cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and J.I.C.A. since 2014.

During this period, 124 workshops have been held to train teachers on effective problem-solving methodologies for the teaching of Mathematics and Science in primary schools.

Other activities include observation classes, awareness and review meetings.

At today’s Hand-Over Ceremony, H.U.E. will present copies of the “Manual for Development of Science and Mathematics Lessons to foster pupils’ abilities to think”, developed by the project staff to contribute to the wealth of resources already shared for teaching.

The Manual is an outcome of the hard work between M.E.S.C. staff in the Curriculum, Design and Materials Division and professors from H.U.E..

The Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Loau Keneti Sio, Japanese Ambassador to Samoa, Tuimaugaoali’i Kazumasa Shibuta, and President of H.U.E., Dr. Haruo Jaana will attend the ceremony together with school principals, curriculum officers for both primary and secondary schools.

The Chief Executive Officer and management team of M.E.S.C. will also be part of the event.

The lessons learned from the P.M.S.P. will be integrated into the work of the Ministry to ensure sustainability of what has been shared by H.U.E. but more importantly to benefit the teaching of Mathematics and Science in primary classrooms.
