Japan has come through to assist hundreds of lives in the village of Sauago.

Yesterday, Ambassador Tuimaugaoalii Kazumasa Shibuta, officially signed a grant to assist with the reconstruction of the village’s water supply.

The grant worth $239,455 will upgrade the water system and ensure the water is safe to consume.

The signing was held at the Embassy of Japan, where leaders of Sauago converged for this significant moment.

“We have already funded over a hundred projects and your project is the 168th one,” said Tuimaugaoalii.

“We support not only building schools but community development, which is very important.

“We are very happy to support  your project.  I ask that you keep the water in your village transparent and fair because I am afraid about the conflict for the villagers to get water.”

The mayor of the village, Tiavatia Konelio Tielu, said the village is extremely grateful.

“I want to humbly thank you, your excellence, Tuimaugaoalii and the people of Japan for helping our village with the upgrading of our water supply,” he said.

“Its been a long time since it was upgraded and this amount of money will be a big, big help for the village.  These funds will be put to good use for our people.  Thankfully no one has got sick from the drinking water yet but these funds will ensure that no one will get sick.”

The grant is provided under the Japanese popular Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security project (G.G.P.) that will see the much need upgraded water supply system for Sauago village.

The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security project (G.G.P.) was introduced in 1991 in response  to various development needs in least developed countries in the Pacific.

The assistance symbolizes Japan’s commitment to support efforts by Samoa and its people to achieve key outcome in its national S.D.S 2016-2019.
