Family first for single man

Committed, caring and loving.

That’s how you describe Kolio Muliaga of Tuana’i.

The 50-year-old is a single man. He does domestic chores, helps to raise his sibling’s children and more.

“In Samoa there are hardly any men at my age that are still single,” Kolio said.

“Normally by the age 28, people are getting married and having kids.

“To me, having no wife and no children doesn’t bother me at all, I live to help my family, especially to support my nephews and nieces.

“We have everything we need, we have access to both water and electricity and my family is well cared for.”

Kolio used to be a carpenter but he doesn’t do it anymore.

“I worked before but when my sister’s kids attended school, I became responsible for taking and picking them up from school.”

In between, he works at the plantation.

“The plantation is all I have to earn some money.

“As you can see me, right after dropping the kids to school I come straight here to work. I love what I’m doing now and I will continue as I know I am blessed to do this.”

Kolio said the work is difficult but when you have love in your heart, nothing is hard.

“We should always prioritise the well being of families. No work is easy but we can do all things out of love. I live to love my family.

“I’ve never thought of having a family of my own because I don’t want to take so many other responsibilities aside from caring for my siblings and their families.

“Even though, I earn a little from my plantation back there but we’re still happy, I mean at least I get to earn to contribute to the family.”

Kolio said the key to life is being happy and being grateful.

“We live a simple life and we hardly have any money,” he said.

“But thank God we still get to wake up every day. And as long as I am alive, I promise to care for my family and serve the Lord because this is what I’m here to do.”
