Miss Hilltop Gardens, Solatasi Laga’aia Sa’u, is Miss Samoa College 2016 to 2017.

The 18-year-old was crowned at the Samoa College Hall on Thursday night, having outperformed her fellow contestants during a fun-filled evening of beauty, glamour and entertainment.

Ms. Sa’u succeeds outgoing Miss Samoa College, Vaifou Koria.

Guided by the theme “Beauty is Confidence,” Ms. Sa’u was exceptional.

She wowed the audience with a performance of a poem by Maya Angelou, grabbed the attention with a puletasi showcasing pride in being Samoan and Chinese and then although she initially struggled during the interview, she delivered a stern message about violence in school.

“Go to church,” she said, “and remember you are representing your parents.”

Delighted about winning, she told the Weekend Observer that to be crowned is “a lifetime experience.”

“I didn’t expect that I’m going to be the Miss Samoa College this year,” she said. “I don’t have confidence in myself and that’s why I wanted to join the pageant.

“Now I know that beauty comes from within. When each and everyone of us has confidence in ourselves, then we can do anything.”

Ms. Sa’u thanked everyone for their support.

“It’s not something to be proud of but to understand that each and everyone can do anything when we have confidence in ourselves.

“Through God, we can do all things.”

Solatasi recited poem by Maya Angelou, an acclaimed American poet, story teller, activist and autobiographer during her talent performance.

Written about the beauty that comes from within, Solatasi, chose the poem because she believes that no matter how she looks on the outside, she is confident in herself that she is pretty.

Her puletasi was inspired by her identity and pays homage to the Chinese influence and their contribution to the Samoan economy from when they first migrated in Samoa in the early 1800s.

Her message is simple – ‘That beauty is amount confidence, confidence in yourself, that you are more than what people see.
