Expect more rain in festive season

Samoa can expect more rain in the coming weeks, says Samoa Meteorological Office Acting C.E.O. Mulipola Ausetalia Titimaea.

Mulipola said the rain experienced over the past few days is expected to clear off over the weekend as the trough of low pressure lying over Samoa moves away.

“By Sunday we should have fine weather and beginning of next week and more rain by the end of the week,” Mulipola told the Samoa Observer.

“This is the wet season and we can expect this type of weather. The tropical depression that affected Fiji also affects us because of the convergence zone.”

Mulipola also advised the public to take extra precautions as we expect more rain during the festive season.

“Samoa can expect more rain as we enter the festive season, because regionally all systems are linked and when something is occurring in Vanuatu, it moves to Fiji,” he said.

“The coverage area of any tropical depression or tropical cyclone is huge, is more than 800km, so when it comes close to Fiji, it will affect us in terms of rain.

“Even though that geographically the countries a far apart, the coverage of the system is quite huge about more than 1000 kilometre, so certainly the outliers of the circulation could affect countries like Samoa.”

He said the humidity this time of year is a problem, especially when the air is moist.

“The environment becomes uncomfortable, a lot of calm periods and then you get the insulation of the solar during the day and then the afternoon, then you usually get showers.”

Mulipola is advising the public to heed warning issued by the weather office and to always be prepared for any natural disaster.
