Interest in the local culture is what brought Briar Davies and Oscar Mardell to Samoa.

The couple from Auckland, New Zealand have always heard about Samoa, but to finally experience her beauty is exciting.

“I just always really wanted to come and explore Samoa,” Briar said.

Oscar, who is a high school teacher, added: “For me I teach a lot of people from Samoa and it is interesting to experience and learn more about the culture they grew up with and know.”

“We love Samoa so far,” he said.

While his hometown has quite a high number of Samoans, he said the Samoan culture is not as authentic as experiencing it in the islands for the first time.

The couple visited the To Sua Ocean Trench, which they described as the highlight of the trip so far.

Briar told the Dear Tourist team that she is impressed with the way locals cook taro.

For Oscar, it is the way locals tattoo their bodies that captivated him.

“The people here have been really friendly and lovely. They are pretty curious to have a nice chat,” Briar said.

They said the attraction signs are not so visible, which makes travelling from one place to another difficult.

Before they depart for their home, they will spend five nights at Savaii and get a feel of what the big island offers.
