The Member of Parliament for A’ana Alofi No. 3, Afamasaga Rico Tupai, said his appointment as a Cabinet Minister took him by surprise yesterday.

Afamasaga is the new Minister for the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

He takes over from the role held by former M.P, Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau.

The 47-year-old is one of the youngest M.P’s, and now the youngest Minister.

Speaking to the Weekend Observer, Afamasaga said he was shocked when the Prime Minister called out his name.

“I was surprised,” he said. “I never thought I would be part of the Cabinet for this term.”

As a tenderfoot into Parliament, Afamasaga said he is humbled by the recognition given to him.

“I did not think I would be selected as one of the Cabinet Minister, but all thank to God.”

He was overjoyed with excitement and he believed this is all part of God’s plan for him.

“I humble myself before God for He has brought me to where I am today.”

Looking ahead, Afamasaga is optimistic.

“For the next five years, I will look at getting the job done and do it to the best of my ability and all that God has conferred in me. I will work with everyone at the Ministry and we will take it from where it is to the next stage.”

However, he also believes that his new task comes with a lot of challenges.

“But all callings are from God and I have faith in him to guide me through this new journey.”

Afamasaga wanted to thank God first and foremost.

“Thank God for selecting me as one of the Ministers and for making this day possible for our country. I also want to thank him for everything.” He also wanted to thank the Prime Minister for considering him as one of the Cabinet Ministers.

“I am just a servant, and I am very humble by this calling.” Lastly, he wanted to thank his constituents, his families and friends for their prayers and support.

Afamasaga Rico Tupai is 47-years-old and he is married to Asenati Tupa’i.
