Thank you for your editorial titled “We need to proceed with caution.” I think Samoa gains more by throwing our support behind Tahiti to host it in 2019.
Samoa is trying to attract over Air Tahiti Nui to our shores and a fibre-optic cable agreement has been signed with Tahiti this year.
Obviously, the Tahiti Nui thing will not be dependent on Samoa supporting Tahiti to host the 2019 games but little things like this are not gone unnoticed at the highest government levels.
Especially given the growing economic importance that the Polynesian Leaders Forum is going to play in Samoa’s economic future.
Samoa would be wise to support Tahiti this time round and in the long-term future, we will get Tahiti’s vote in any future bid Samoa wishes to make. If Tahiti and Fiji were to put in bids alongside Samoa, it is highly unlikely the Pacific Games Council will go with Samoa anyway because we only hosted it in 2007.
