The Toa Gas N.R.L. 9s series is back.

The tournament kicked off last weekend at the A.C.P. Marist Sport Complex at Lotopa.

The tournament is to develop Rugby League in Samoa, according to the tournament director, Ponifasio Vasa.

It is set for six weeks, with 12 teams from Upolu and Savaii.

“The tournament is an annual tournament aiming to develop Rugby League in Samoa and the local talents we have here,” he said.

“There will be two legs here in Upolu and three legs will be held in the Big Island of Savaii”.

The tournament in Savaii will coincide with a milestone for the tournament’s major sponsor, Toa Gas.

“One of the tournaments in Savai’i next month will line up with Toa Gas refill launching there.”

Vasa also commented on the significance of the tournament this year.

“There will be a curtain raiser game against Scotland this year, and there will be local boys in this tournament will be playing in that game through our national team.

There will also be a Commonwealth tournament in the Gold Coast Australia and the boys playing in this tournament will be playing in that tournament”.

The tournament will also help to identify a Samoa team for the upcoming regional tournaments such as the Mini Games and the Pacific Games.

Vasa reminded that five local boys played in the Toa Samoa National team during the 2013 Rugby League World Cup in England.
