Should the P.M.’s term be limited?

20 July 2017, 12:00AM

Do you think there should be a limit on the number of terms for the Prime Minister? The question has surfaced following the government’s decision to change the Head of State after two terms in office. Deidre Fanene asked in today’s Street Talk and this is what people said:

Tina Vaipua - Magiagi

If the Head of States position has been limited to five years then I think the PM’s position should also be five years. Give the chance to other people who have been in Cabinet for so long. We also need to hear from other people and their ideas because we have been hearing from Tuilaepa for almost 20 years now.

Jolly Ulumoto - Laulii

I think the terms should be limited. If Cabinet decided to change the current law for the Head of State, then they should also consider changing the law for the Prime Minister. They cannot change one and leave the other one, it’s unfair. Give the chance to other members of Parliament and the people to vote for the next Prime Minister.

Pouli Faapouli - Utualii

Well, I agree with the thought because the Head of States position is one position that they should never have touched in the first place. If this is the case then I think the P.M. should also have a limited time. I say five years for the position and then change, because Samoa needs changes and a change is good.

Moe Lei Sam - Taufusi

I agree that there should also be a limited time for the Prime Minister position. The reason is because our country is in a mess because of the current Prime Minister’s leadership. We need someone that prioritises the people rather than the development of the country in terms of buildings, cables etc. Tuilaepa has been Prime Minister for so long now and I tell you the people are suffering. So we need to have someone else with fresh ideas.

Penina Gasē - Matautu

Of course there should be a limited time for the prime minister as well. We have to look at the current situation of the country and ask the questions. Are the people happy? Can the people afford the cost of living? Do they have everything they need? If those questions can be answered then that is the answer for that question. If the people are not happy then we should consider new members to run our country, people who prioritizes the needs of the country.

Kimberly Motu - Faleasiu

It’s not a bad idea it should be considered by the cabinet. If they can change the law for the Head of State then they should be able to change the law for the Prime Minister position as well. It’s all for good cause the people want to hear someone different who have new ideas so I think the government should consider it, especially Tuilaepa.
